5 Google Ads Mistakes That Are Costing You Money Right Now

Most Google Ads accounts we audit aren’t failing because ads don’t work. They’re failing because of fixable setup errors that quietly drain budgets every single day.

If you’re spending money on Google Ads and not seeing the return you expected, there’s a good chance one of these five mistakes is why.

01. Bidding Broad With No Negative Keywords

Broad match keywords sound appealing, cast a wide net, reach more people, job done. In reality, broad match without a solid negative keyword list means Google decides what your ads show for. And Google’s definition of ‘relevant’ is generous, to say the least.

We’ve seen budgets burned on searches that have nothing to do with the business. A plumber showing up for ‘plumbing courses.’ A solicitor appearing for ‘free legal advice.’ Money gone, no chance of converting.

The fix: Build a negative keyword list from day one. Check your Search Terms report weekly. If you wouldn’t want to pay for that click, exclude it.

02. Ignoring Quality Score

Quality Score is Google’s rating of how relevant and useful your ads are, scored from 1 to 10. Most people ignore it. That’s a mistake, because it directly affects how much you pay per click and where your ad appears.

A competitor with a Quality Score of 8 can outrank you while paying less than you. Poor ad copy, mismatched landing pages, and low click-through rates all drag your score down and push your costs up.

Write ad copy that speaks directly to the search intent. Send clicks to a landing page that matches what the ad promises. Small improvements here compound quickly.

03. Sending Every Click to Your Homepage

Your homepage is designed for everyone. That means it’s optimised for no one.

When someone clicks an ad looking for a specific product, service, or offer, they expect to land somewhere that matches exactly what they searched for. Drop them on a generic homepage and most of them will bounce before you’ve had a chance.

Dedicated landing pages, built around a single message, a single action, consistently outperform homepages. We’re talking 2 to 3 times the conversion rate in many cases.

The fix: Create a specific landing page for each campaign or ad group. Match the headline to the ad. Remove distractions. Make the next step obvious.

04. Blindly Trusting Performance Max

Performance Max launched with a lot of hype. The idea, let Google’s AI find the best placements, audiences, and creatives across all its channels, sounds great on paper.

The problem is that PMax gives Google almost total control, and Google optimises for its own revenue targets, not yours. Without proper asset groups, audience signals, and regular exclusions, a significant chunk of your budget often ends up on YouTube pre-rolls, Display network placements, and branded searches you’d have won anyway without paying for them.

It’s a black box. And black boxes are dangerous when it’s your money inside.

The fix: Use PMax with intention. Set clear audience signals, exclude irrelevant placements, monitor the insights tab obsessively, and run it alongside (not instead of) standard Search campaigns.

05. Running Ads Without Proper Conversion Tracking

This is the one that surprises people most, because it’s so fundamental, and so common.

If Google can’t see what a conversion looks like in your account, Smart Bidding has nothing to optimise towards. It’ll spend your budget, sure. But it’ll be guessing. Around one in three accounts we audit has conversion tracking issues, broken tags, missing thank-you page events, phone calls going untracked, form submissions not firing correctly.

You can have the best ads, the best landing page, the best offer, and still have no idea what’s actually working.

The fix: Audit your conversion tracking before you spend another penny. Make sure every meaningful action, form fill, phone call, purchase, booking, is tracked accurately. Then, and only then, let Smart Bidding do its thing.

So, What Now?
